Investigating Animal Cruelty vii About the authors Eric Sakach is senior law enforcement specialist for The Humane Society of the United States. Eric joined The HSUS in 1976, and over the past 37 years he has been involved in numerous animal cruelty and animal fighting investigations. His undercover work led to more than 500 arrests and some of the first convictions under the federal Animal Welfare Act. Sakach has authored and contributed to many articles and manuals for law enforcement officers, and he has qualified as an expert witness in courts across the U.S. and in Canada. A member of the faculty at the California Humane Law Enforcement Academy since 1984 and a POST (Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training) course coordinator and instructor, Sakach has instructed classes before thousands of humane and law enforcement personnel throughout the U.S., Canada and Brazil. Adam Parascandola is the Director of Animal Protection and Crisis Response for Humane Society International. In his role, Adam focuses on coordinating policy related to cruelty intervention and response for all HSI offices; developing global strategies; and assisting in enacting and enforcing animal protection laws and other cruelty responses. Adam has worked for 20 years rescuing and sheltering animals from animal fighting, puppy mills, hoarding and other forms of cruelty and neglect in the United States and around the globe. Since January 2015, Adam has helped to rescue and relocate more than 500 dogs from South Korean dog meat farms and to rehome them in the United States and Canada. Ashley Mauceri is the Law Enforcement Outreach Director for The Humane Society of the United States and has been with the organization since 2009. Ashley’s principal role has been to oversee The HSUS’s work on illegal animal cruelty, and she has worked with constituents and law enforcement officers across the country to investigate and support prosecutions of animal abuse. Under her leadership, The HSUS has rescued thousands of animals from life-threatening cruelty. As Law Enforcement Outreach Director, Ashley continues her work with law enforcement agencies to improve the lives of animals through training and support of pro-animal legislation.
