Animal care standards for some common animals This section includes minimum care guidelines for the following animals: • Dogs • Cats • Horses • Cattle • Sheep • Goats • Pigs • Rabbits • Birds • Chickens/ducks/geese • Gerbils/guinea pigs/hamsters/mice/rats Dogs Terminology • Female: Bitch • Male: Male 68 The Humane Society of the United States Basic animal care standards • Fresh, clean water (in a spill-proof container) should be accessible at all times. • Dogs should be fed quality dog food at least once a day based on the package’s feeding instructions (unless otherwise directed by a veterinarian). • Dogs should have shelter available to protect them from the elements, even if they’re outside for a short time only. • Dogs should generally not be kept outside. By nature, dogs are social ”pack” animals and have a psychological need to be with their human packs. Dogs who are left outside could be susceptible to theft or attacks by other dogs or predators.
