Two tall ships recently came into port at Fisherman’s Wharf in Venice, and they brought a touch of history with them. The Columbus Foundation, based in the British Virgin Islands, travels across the county with The Niña and Pinta, two of the three ships Columbus sailed the ocean blue upon. Each is a replica and they have been featured in several movies and historial re-enactments. The Nina is rumored to have logged more than 25,000 hours upon the oceans of the world under Columbus’ hand, and was last recorded historically in 1501. The replica of the Pinta was built recently in Brazil and is actually a bit larger than her historic counterpart. She is actually available for private parties and charters, if you’re interested. The Columbus Foundation was created to educate the public about the “caravel,” which is what Columbus used to discover new places all around the world. The ships normally travel approximately 10 months out of the year and go to 30 to 40 locations around the country. Top: Photos of the ships being built. Below: Photos of the Pinta.
