With every bone in her face broken, they performed reconstructive surgery replacing most of her bones with titanium plates. Consequently, she lost most of her teeth and had to have her jaws reattached. With her life on the line and the dire need to reconstruct her face, her teeth were the last of concern at the time. Now living with a “flipper” in place of her missing front tooth and years of super gluing it in, on top of having to fixodent in a bottom one, and having no back teeth whatsoever, she is ready for a new smile!  A smile with teeth that she doesn’t have to remove every time she eats making eating out at restaurants or with others an embarrassment.  This makeover would not only give her a smile back, which was suddenly ripped away from her 17 years ago, it will give her the outward confidence to capture in photos what a happy GeeGee she is with her grand babies. This once in a lifetime makeover would change her life forever.  Latoya Dawkins, 41 3 children ages 20, 17, and 15   Single parenting to three children hasn’t always been easy but Latoya is so proud of her children and the young adults they are becoming. There is so much joy in this stage of their lives but with that comes the reality of what a detriment her teeth have become. Her lack of teeth has made taking pictures with her children and loved ones an embarrassment and eating meals together a painful and difficult process. It started in December of 2013 when she went in for her annual women’s exam and casually mentioned to the doctor about a lump she noticed under her breast. Due to the location of the bump and lack of family history with cancer Latoya dismissed this bump for some time naively mistaken it for nothing to worry about. After examining her, the doctor sent her for testing and much to her surprise Latoya was diagnosed with Stage 2 Triple Negative Carcinoma Breast Cancer. Choosing to opt out of a mastectomy, Latoya along with her doctors, decided to try shrinking with lump with chemo first then removing the lump and surrounding tissue. Thankfully it worked and she is now in remission for over 2 years! However, no one told Latoya about what chemo could do to her teeth or how she could have prevented such damage until it was too late. Apparently, before starting chemo it is best to have fluoride treatments done to minimize the deteriorating of your teeth from chemo but she was unaware of this as her teeth became weak and began breaking off. She now has no back teeth and has to chew everything with the front teeth making most meals very difficult and painful as her gums are often sore and swollen from assisting her in chewing.” I’ve always been an upbeat person, I love to smile and laugh because it is who I am, but after  losing teeth I became a different person, I  won’t smile without covering mouth. People just don’t realize that your smile is who you are.” Winning this contest would give Latoya so much of her life back and allow her to be who she was and still is from the inside out.
