lakeland institute for learning a school that offers more than just academics It’s a school for students that have special learning needs, but it is a school that offers more than just academics! Our students need extra help to become successful, productive members of society - whatever that may mean in their lifetime. Most of our students need clinical services in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Counseling, Speech/Language Pathology, Occupational or Physical therapies. It is why we refer to our program as a “clinical” school. We believe in treating the whole child to bring them to the threshold of learning. Many of our students can learn the Florida State Standards curriculum that will lead to a regular high school diploma, but some may not. Since we enroll 3rd through 12th grade, some of our students will spend a few years at LIfL, gaining intense academic individualization, remediation, and clinical therapeutic services, so they can return to the mainstream and be effective. Other students may remain at LifL to find the degree of services they need to obtain success. It all depends on the student and where they MAY find security, academic accomplishment, career aspiration and transition into becoming a productive member of society. why should I enroll my child at lakeland institute for learning? Our program is built on improving students’ performance using applied behavioral analysis techniques. You may think, “But my child is not a behavior problem.” If not, are they performing as well as they can? At LifL, from the moment they enter our door, our Chief Intervention Specialist greets the students and through clear expectations and multiple reward systems, students encounter various forms of incentives and rewards. They can choose to perform and engage in the fun activities they reap from the built-in motivators or they can spend their “choice time” returning to uncompleted academics or the absence of a behavioral objective. Academics Academically, we adhere to the Florida State Standards and our report cards are standard driven. LifL does not participate in state assessment practices, but adheres to norm referenced testing to determine students’ growth. Our students are held to the same rigorous standards, but are taught in 21st century modalities and tested for learning in the content areas. All students start their day with homeroom, then a career based class in either Technology or Culinary Arts every other day. We employ a Master’s Level Reading Coach who tests each student with the Wilson Reading system (an ESE product), and individually tutors for skill deficits. We individualize instruction for Math and English Language Arts (ELA) through a teacher facilitated, prescriptive diagnostic computerized program and progress monitor three times a year for growth. Students are never left behind in ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies, but are kept on grade level through group instruction. Since we are standard driven, we pull from a variety of popular curriculums. In order to apply theory to hands on skills, students participate in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) for sixty minutes every other day. On the opposing day, Social Skills are explored in a small group setting as applicable to the different age groups. The Institute is excited to add a Transition Program in the 2017 -18 school year for students from 14 years and up who are interested in beginning to enter the world of work. We do not mix lack of performance - a behavior 34 WomanToWomanMagazine.com
