CHAPTER 4Diving Physiology ©2000 by Jolie Bookspan, Ph.D. Physiology is the study of your body’s functions. To be a safer diver, it helps to understand the effects of diving on these functions. Rather than rattle off lists of obscure anatomical parts and functions, this chapter relates them to your diving health. Laws of physics, explained in the previous chapter, do not by themselves explain or determine your body processes. In spite of the many external physical forces, your body does interesting things to try to keep its functions within certain ranges. Past a point, however, the physical diving environment affects your body and can result in medical problems. This chapter is not meant as a guide to medical diagnosis or treatment. This chapter overviews some possible occurrences and some things to do to prevent and provide first aid for these problems.
