Chapter 5- Decompression and Recompression Decompression and Recompression 167 depth and time, just as on a dive. To ensure proper treatment, the timing must be controlled. To document the treatment, any activities affecting the subject or any change in subject condition must be logged into the time record. Because inside tenders are “diving,” their depth and time profiles must also be logged. The timekeeper logs all relevant events and times and keeps the treatment schedule “on time.” Commonly, the timekeeper is also FIGURE 5-20. This person monitors and controls the chamber pressure. The chamber must be flushed with fresh gas periodically (i.e., “venting the chamber”), as dictated by the chamber schedule. This is the chamber operator’s job. Tender. Scuba diving patients can be very ill people. Proper monitoring and care often must be conducted with “hands-on” contact. The inside tender is the “hands-on” person taking care of the recompression subject. This individual needs to have experience in acute care and is often a paramedic or nurse. The tender is under pressure with the subject and is “diving.” On long recompression treatments, the tender has the potential of becoming a treatment subject if decompression obligations are not met. Chambers with multiple locks allow the switching of tenders, to enhance both tender safety and subject care. Physician consultant. In remote sites on commercial diving operations, recompression treatments are often run by established company guidelines and physician consultation is not ordinarily needed. However, things do not always go as anticipated, and when the standard protocols fail to yield good results, diving medical officers (i.e., physicians) are brought in to direct FIGURE 5-19.
