NAUI Master Scuba Diver 178 Rescue and Emergency Procedures CHAPTER 6 Rescue and Emergency Procedures Diving is among the most enjoyable of the many adventure sports. However, accidents can occur. The objective of the information in this chapter aims to reduce the risk of this happening to you. If you and your buddy are adequately trained and prepared, you will have a lifetime of enjoyable diving in front of you, as the few accidents that do occur are usually preventable. The major cause of diving fatalities is panic. There is always an alternative to a panicked response. All you have to do is put it into action. This area of the book will focus on eliminating as many as possible of the factors contributing to accidents. Thus far in your diving education you have learned to bring an unconscious diver to the surface and to administer in-water artificial respiration. You have been encouraged to acquire the skills of first aid and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), including oxygen administration, and you have learned the basics of first aid for various diving maladies and injuries. You need to know more and be able to do more in order to respond to and manage diving accidents. This section will increase your knowledge of rescue and accident management techniques, but you will need to complete the NAUI Rescue Scuba Diver or Advanced Rescue Scuba Diver course to develop all of the skills and knowledge needed in the event of a diving emergency.
