One person should stand by the phone or radio in the event of a call for additional information. DAN or a local, operational chamber may need to be contacted if hyperbaric treatment is indicated. • An accounting must be made for all divers involved in the diving activities. Divers must be recalled and a roll call taken. • Locate the victim’s buddy as soon as possible. If he or she cannot be found, have a search conducted immediately in the area where the first victim was recovered. • Control the group and any observers. • Station someone to meet and direct emergency medical personnel traveling to the scene. • Assign someone to keep a time log of all activities and events. • Assign someone to locate the victim’s identification and any medical history or medical alert information. • Monitor the victim continuously, even if he or she regains consciousness and indicates a feeling of well being. • Assign someone to prepare a list of all witnesses to the accident. The list should include names, addresses, and phone numbers. • Secure the victim’s equipment. Do not test the gear. Turn off the air, but do not remove the regulator from the tank. Hold the equipment “as is” until released to the proper authorities. As you can see by now, there are many things to manage simultaneously during a diving accident. If you are administering first aid, the task of accident management is even more difficult. Try to identify trained and qualified individuals who can be tasked with administering first aid to the victim while you or someone trained manages the situation.
