With the card direct reading compass, rotate the compass until the desired direction is beneath the lubber line. The lubber line then indicates the desired direction. There is nothing to set, and the course heading is indicated under the lubber line. To establish a direction with an indirect reading compass, simply set the index marks of the bezel to the desired bearing and rotate the compass until the needle is bracketed by the index marks. The lubber line will indicate the proper direction. The advantages of both types of direct reading compasses are combined with the indirect reading compass. The selected bearing does not need to be remembered; the needle points directly to the actual course heading and the lubber line in the desired direction of travel.
