NAUI Master Scuba Diver CHAPTER 11 Technical Diving In recent years the term technical diving has emerged to 248 Technical Diving describe a type of diving that is generally considered to be beyond the limits of traditional sport diving. While traditional sport diving refers to no-stop scuba dives on air to 40 msw (130 fsw), technical diving can be defined as extreme sport diving that often encompasses greater depths and exposure times than traditional sport diving limits allow, and often involves diving in an overhead environment or the use of breathing gas mixtures other than air. Technical divers use methods and equipment that have been borrowed from commercial and military applications, such as mixed gases, rebreather units, and custom decompression tables. It allows divers to explore a wide range of underwater environments and perform tasks beyond the scope of traditional sport diving. Technical diving requires a great amount of training, preparation, and equipment. Many of these divers are “pushing the limits” of diving. However, most are very cautious within the operational parameters of technical diving. Even with proper training, this type of diving activity carries with it an increased risk of injury.
