H Like many, Chrystine’s first experience with horses was a pony ride at a county fair. Her first instruction was in dressage, giving her solid basics in riding. She went on to train with Chuck Grant, known as the ‘father of U.S. Dressage’, and his wife, Emmy. At 14, Chrystine took a trip to Europe with Emmy to Europe and visited the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. Chrystine participated in the USET screening trials and went on to work with Bertalan de Némethy. In 1965 she won the Medal and Maclay Finals as well as the National Horse Show for the Regular Working Hunter Appointments Stake. Chrystine was on the team that won the FEI President’s Cup for winning the most Nations Cups one year. She was not chosen for the 1968 U.S. Olympic team, but that did not slow her down. Chrystine went on to direct the U.S. Equestrian Team’s training center at Gladstone, N.J. and it’s show jumping competitions. From 1981 to 1989, she was a team manager for two Olympic Games, two Pan Am Games and two Show Jumping Teams. She then became the Executive Director for the American Horse Shows Association. Amazingly, Chrystine found time to teach students while working as the Executive Director of the AHSA and the National Horse Show. When the United States Equestrian Federation was formed in 2003, Chrystine served as secretary until becoming president in 2013. After stepping down from that role this past December, she was awarded the 2016 USHJA Lifetime Achievement Award, a recognition she most certainly deserves and has earned!
