Most often, the place where our horses live is very limited in space, and far from what would be natural. The space where the horse can step without incurring in manure or wet bedding is mostly inexistent, even when the stall gets cleaned multiple times a day. In the domestic horse environment, water is not available for the horse to step into it; manure mixed with soil sets in the frog and promotes the growth of microorganisms that cause disease in the hoof. If we disrupt the accumulation of material with frequent cleaning we do not allow enough time for the pathogenic process to happen. If we simply use a hoof pick to remove what is packed under the hoof, and use a hose to wash the hoof wall and its bottom surface we can achieve a sufficiently thorough cleaning, and maintain the physiological level of hydration of the hoof tissues. Daily attention for their hooves can also be the proper way to train horses to lift their limbs and even consciously hold them up for us. This behavior definitely helps the work of the professional farriers and trimmers, who definitely would appreciate the horse’s cooperation, because they work with him on a regular, but much less frequent basis. In my opinion, horsemanship plays a determinant role in any moment between human and horse.
