CD REVIEW By Dean M. Shapiro Darcy Malone and The Tangle Still Life (Independent) Incorporating a style of music she described in a Breakthru Media magazine article as “feel-good, soul-funk-rock with a multitude of pizazz,” Darcy Malone and The Tangle broke through recently with their debut CD that is everything the talented lead vocalist described it to be. Backed by a lineup that, at the time, included her husband, Chris Boye on lead guitar and vocals; multi-instrumentalist Jagon Eldridge on baritone and tenor saxes, piano and keyboards; Glenn Newbauer on rhythm guitar; Craig Toomey on bass and vocals; and Billy Schell on drums and percussion, Malone sings her heart out in a variety of styles ranging from sultry to soulful to rockin’ and voice ranges from low alto to mid-soprano. The 12-track CD, consisting of all original tunes that are equally credited to all of the members of that lineup, features some incredible musical gymnastics by Boye on lead guitar and Eldridge who alternates effortlessly between the saxes and keyboard, backed neatly by the steady rhythms of Newbauer’s guitar and Toomey’s bass and the backbeat of Schell’s drums and percussion. Standout tracks include “Motel Room” and “Together Tonight” with Malone harmonizing with a male vocal lead who isn’t identified; “Now I Know (Fake), in which Malone calls out an unfaithful lover in no uncertain terms; “On Baronne,” which is an ode to a musician panhandling under the expressway overpass for money to buy a guitar; and the closing track, “Don’t Tell,” featuring some outstanding guitar and sax work. Still Life is available at local record shops or through the group’s website at http://darcymaloneandthetangle.com. ADVANCE NOTICE: Darcy Malone and The Tangle will be releasing a new, four-track extended play CD around the end of May 2017.
