The Monkey Boy WORDS: By Kara Chalmers PICTURES: Whitney Patton From an early age, Kyle and Lydia Lawton called their son Kody “monkey boy.” One of his signature moves as a little kid was hanging, upside-down, from the handle over their car door. “I always climbed everything, and jumped off everything,” said Kody, now 10 and one of the best boy gymnasts in Florida. Kody’s interest in gymnastics began at age four, when he went to a friend’s birthday party at a gymnastics club. He asked afterward, “Can we do this?” noted Lydia Lawton. So, she signed up Kody (as well as his sister Ellie, then six years old) in a once-a-week intro to gymnastics class. It wasn’t long before the two began competing on the team for the club.
