Leading the Way... WORDS: AnnaMaria Carleton ELC Literacy Coordinator Early literacy is an essential component of a child's educational success. It can improve a child's language and comprehension skills, character and shape recognition, attention span, and can instill a love for learning. Did you know that 90% of the brain's development takes place in the rst ve years of life? In the last week of March, volunteer community leaders had an opportunity to have a signicant impact on the future generation of Manatee County by participating in our “Every Child a Reader” program, which is a joint effort between the Early Learning Coalition of Manatee County, Bradenton Kiwanis, and the Michael Saunders & Company Foundation. The volunteers read to over 3,000 local children at 23 Manatee County School District sites, and 31 private early child care facilities. After reading the book, the volunteer distributed it to every child in the classroom to take home. Just imagine how thrilled you would be if you were four years-old and a community leader came into your classroom to read a book to you, and then you got to take home your very own copy to read with your family! 48
