WORDS: Jessica Anderson With summer right around the corner, Manatee County Schools Food & Nutrition Services is getting ready to feed students across the district with the Summer BreakSpot program. Also, for the third year in a row, kids were fed during the March Spring Break, with over 1,600 meals served. Food & Nutrition Services will again be providing free breakfast, lunch and/or snack at multiple locations this summer staring on June 5th, 2017. The Summer BreakSpot program is part of a USDA program where free meals are offered to all children who are 18 or younger, and provides a free breakfast, service is not based on income status, and all students in the district who are 18 and younger will be able to participate. The program is designed to ensure that children continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session. Manatee County School District General Funds are not used for this program. Meals will be delivered to local sites such as Boys & Girls Clubs, churches and community centers, along with two mobile feeding buses, which will deliver meals to six bus stops at apartment complexes and local parks. Both buses have indoor and outdoor seating for kids to enjoy their meal in the comfort of air conditioning or in the shade of an awning. The Summer BreakSpot menu includes wraps, whole grain hoagie sandwiches, fresh fruit, vegetables, and low-fat milk. NEW THIS YEAR are Watermelon Wednesdays, where kids can try fresh Florida watermelon every Wednesday on the mobile feeding buses!
