HISTORICAL The craft of layering padding with fabric (also known as quilting) dates as far back as ancient Egypt. In 12th century Europe, a quilted garment, later known as a doublet, was traditionally worn under body armor. Quilting made it’s appearance in the United States in the 1800s, as women during this time were actively sewing to keep their families clothed and warm at night with homemade bed linens. It was the Victorian era, which introduced the styles of whole cloth quilts, appliqué by way of broderie perse quilts; and the center-focused medallion quilting method. The 1900s brought the industrial revolution with a progression of technology and the creation of textiles in mass amounts. This era made fabrics affordable for most families to purchase, which in turn led to an increase in the making of quilts.
