In the 1800s, the introduction of sewing machines changed our lives forever. The start of ‘crazy quilts’ allowed individuals to showcase their creativity. Another style of quilting that was popular during this time frame was ‘Biscuit Quilting’. This was carried on from the Victorian area and involved stuffed squares creating the “puffy” effect. One of the first biscuit quilt patterns can be dated as far back as 1882! By the early 1900s, the act of quilting began to change from a necessity to the creative art we love today. Cottons for quilting during this time period were burgundy, navy, and dark greens. The patterns that started to become popular included Log Cabin and Double Wedding Ring. The Roaring 20s also brought the French style of Art Decoratifs with a modern style that emphasized the art of craftsmanship and use of rich materials. MID 1800s EARLY 1900s This era made fabrics affordable for most families to purchase, which in turn led to an increase in the making of quilts. 23
