MOMENTS TO REMEMBER Three Generations of Synchro Swimmers in the Water Saving the best for last, after a long day of Synchronized Swimming competition, the Palm Beach Coralytes Masters Team of Debra Cane, Marta Miranda, Suzanne Plamondon, Stacey Staley, Coralytes coaches Courtney Karolinko and mother Jacki Barrett topped off the day with their six-member team performance set to “It’s Raining Men,” combined with a touch of Aretha Franklin to complete their edgy team routine. The two-minute routine including Karolinko, who swam in the Games as a teenager, performed while eight month’s pregnant with her daughter-to-be, Aria. The routine was judged based on their artistic routine, execution and difficulty. Karolinko and Barrett’s 12-hour day was filled with coaching, judging and swimming. Karolinko had rambling nerves before the competition, because she and her team were unable to warm up due to her mandatory coaching duties for Novice and Junior Olympic teams of the Coralytes. Courtney delivered Aria in July and a swimsuit and Coralytes T-shirt were waiting for her. 50 Father’s Day at Palm Beach County Fest Tampa’s Steve Quillian had a busy Father’s Day weekend. Quillian and his three sons, Kaeden, 10, Korban, 8, and Kolten, 4, all were competitors in the 2016 Taekwondo Championships at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. During the first day of competition, Quillian and his sons racked up 19 medals after a day of Forms and Sparring matches. Oldest son, Kaeden, won 7 of the 19 medals, with five being gold, making him the top collector of medals of the weekend of the Quillian boys. Middle son, Korban, collected 5 medals and youngest son, Kaeden, racked up 4. Steve competed in two form events, Pair Poomse and WTF Poomse, on Saturday, winning medals in 3 categories. Steve came out with a win and a gold medal in a second day Gyoroogi Sparring match. All of Quillian’s children began to compete in Taekwondo competitions at the age of four. Kaeden and Korban are both black belts in their age division and Kolten has made his way to a yellow belt after recently starting to compete. Quillian’s infant, 9-month old Ruthie, will be a future Taekwondo competitor. Challenged Warrior wins Gold Medal A special moment of the Palm Beach County Festival came when 12-year old Meredith Pence, of Symmetry Martial Arts in Jupiter, was able to compete in the Inaugural Taekwondo Challenged Warrior Division event. Pence, a yellow belt athlete, who experiences epileptic seizures due to Dravet Syndrome, won a gold medal in the breaking competition. She broke three sets of boards, being held in place by her coach, Sonia Mendez, with a series of punches and kicks. “Meredith is such an amazing spirit and gives it her all every time she comes for training,” said Mendez. “She never complains and inspires me to be my best all the time. She’s my hero.” Mendez coaches both Meredith and her brother Mason, who won a breaking gold medal and a silver forms medal in the 6-7 age group, at Symmetry Martial Arts.
