Hello from the Stewart Family Produce just as fresh as produce gets. In recent years, The Wharf in Orange Beach has grown into a full-fledged destination in its own right. Beautiful views, world-class dining, familythemed entertainment and retail shopping options are plentiful. In addition to spending an afternoon watching the boats in the marina and indulging in “retail therapy” to their heart’s content, now visitors to The Wharf have another shopping choice – choosing from some of the best fruit, vegetable and produce selections in the entire county! Rick and Jeanine Stewart, owners of Burris Farm Market in Loxley, have operated one of the most highly-respected open-air markets in Baldwin County for 13 years. Just recently, the pair opened a second location at The Wharf in Orange Beach. Although entering into the “Market” industry wasn’t necessarily a planned idea, it has worked out exceptionally well. “I was down for my uncle’s funeral, who passed away during Hurricane Ivan,” said Rick. “I stopped in Burris Farm Market to buy some new potatoes to take home to my Mom. I met the owner, and one year later the market was mine.” In addition to a large selection of produce, Burris Farm Market also has homemade jams and preserves, pickles, sorghum, molasses, and even locally made cheese. Keeping it local is not a new concept for Rick, but neither is broadening life’s horizons. “I grew up here. My Dad built a small cabin in East Orange Beach on Washington Blvd. in 1970. One of the things I enjoy most is all the people I meet from all over the country and world.” The Stewarts point to the constantly changing product availabilities, people, and the opportunity to provide fresh quality, healthy meals as their most enjoyable facets of their family business, which includes sons Tanner Tolbert and Ethan Tolbert. Taking a look back in time from their current successful status, it isn’t hard for Rick to see how far they have come. “In 1986, my dad and I were riding down Canal Road on a Sunday afternoon when he pointed out a place next to the cement plant and said ‘Rickey, you should open a business here one day’. Now, 31years later, here we grow.”
