We’re not in Kansas any more Dorothy’s Favorite Pancakes on the Gulf Coast Most people would agree that no matter how far and wide you travel, there is truly no place like home. For Jennifer and Erich Weishaupt, owners of the aptly-named Ruby Slipper Café in Orange Beach, these words have never rung truer. What started out in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina as an amenity for the storm-ravaged neighborhood to attract residents to re-occupy homes in the area, has now blossomed into a successful location right here on the Alabama Gulf Coast. “We knew our tagline “No Place Like Home” resonated with the New Orleans market, but we wanted to test the brand and restaurant outside of the Big Easy,” said Jennifer. “The Gulf Coast was perfect to test the concept with the seasonal traffic.” The first “Ruby Slipper” was constructed merely blocks away from their own Mid-City New Orleans home and neighborhood, which had been deluged with over five feet of water. With a goal of helping to revitalize the area, Jennifer and Erich sought the perfect name for their project. “It goes back to why we decided to open the very first one, to bring people some sense of homecoming after Hurricane Katrina. Based off our name, we agree with Dorothy Gale that there is no place like home!” Now, along with their three children, the couple are offering up their version of “home” right here in Orange Beach. In addition to running and parenting, the couple enjoy being actively involved in the communities they serve. “Sharing the city we love (New Orleans) through great food and a friendly experience if why we love this journey.”
