14 UNC CHARLOTTE | J U N I O R YEAR “Encourage your student to take the initiative in finding and pursuing opportunities, both academic and social, to get involved in activities that stimulate his or her interests.“ HOW DO YOU STAY CONNECTED WITH UNC CHARLOTTE? “We stay connected primarily through Noah. We also read the Niner Nation Family publication.” HOW HAS YOUR PARENTING STYLE EVOLVED SINCE YOUR STUDENT BEGAN THEIR TIME AT UNC CHARLOTTE? “Our parenting style hasn’t changed significantly since Noah entered UNCC. We have long treated him as our intellectual equal, encouraged him to participate in discussions and freely express his opinion on issues and assume personal responsibility commensurate with his age and level of education. The only thing that has really changed is that Noah has taken on more responsibility for his own circumstances.” WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF UNC CHARLOTTE? “The fact that in addition to providing a good education, the school has provided Noah with numerous opportunities to pursue things he is interested in both on and off campus.” ANY ADVICE FOR OTHER UNC CHARLOTTE PARENT AND FAMILY MEMBERS? “Encourage your student to take the initiative in finding and pursuing opportunities, both academic and social, to get involved in activities that stimulate his or her interests. Allow your student to accept a level of personal responsibility commensurate with his or her own willingness to take on that responsibility and your assessment of the level of responsibility he or she is capable of assuming. Stay involved, but leave your student room to mature and grow as an individual on his or her own.”
