i UNC CHARLOTTE | A LET TER FROM THE ASSISTANT D IRECTOR O F PARENT AND FAMILY SERVICES Greetings, Niner Nation Family! The end of an academic year is one of excitement and nostalgia for those working in higher education. Each May, we say goodbye (for now) to the students who have been deeply involved in our offices and teams as they go out into the “real world” to achieve new successes and dreams. Concurrently, we also begin the process of welcoming the multitudes of new students to our institution who will make their own mark on campus over the next four or more years. The high and low of this experience is what makes working with students in higher education so exciting—helping students find and harness their potential as well as utilize everything they’ve learned to be active global citizens as alumni. To those students and families that are completing their time at UNC Charlotte, congratulations! Your student has achieved a major milestone by earning their degree and now join the 32.5 percent of the U.S. population that have this same achievement (Ryan & Bauman, 2016). UNC Charlotte is committed to taking the education achieved here and giving back to the Charlotte community and beyond. We look forward to seeing how your students impact the world around them and the great successes they achieve. Though their time as a student may be finished, they are never done being a part of the Niner Nation! For those students and families that are just beginning their 49er journey, welcome to the family! The next four or more years are going to be filled with amazing learning, meaningful connections and unforgettable campus experiences. UNC Charlotte offers a wealth of opportunities for students and families to get involved and engaged both in the classroom and beyond. During their time on our campus, your student will not only learn new knowledge related to their degree, but also learn more about themselves and their strengths while acquiring and sharpening new skills to be the best in their future careers. Niner Nation Family and the campus community look forward to keeping your family informed and engaged during your time with us to assist you in having the best possible 49er experience. In this issue of Niner Nation Family magazine, we focus on perspectives. According to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, perspective is defined as “the capacity to view things in their true relations or relative importance.” In the magazine, we have worked to provide a year-by-year (and beyond) guide for student life at UNC Charlotte. Included in each year is both a student and family perspective, reflecting on what stood out that particular year and how students and families can be successful. We are especially excited about the different family perspectives on the UNC Charlotte experience. In addition to these perspectives, each year addresses different common issues faced by students and families. For this reason, the magazine has relevance to your family no matter where you might be in your 49er experience, even those who are graduating this semester. We hope this issue stays relevant beyond your initial reading and supplements those items provided annually in our Parent Guide (available at our website: parents.uncc.edu). As we try to say often, thank you for your involvement and commitment to UNC Charlotte. Niner Nation Family is here to support you on your 49er family journey, and we appreciate your involvement with our initiatives for parents and family members. Whether your student is just starting or graduating this spring, don’t ever hesitate to reach out to us, as we love to hear from family members. We are just a phone call (704-687-0341) or email (parents@uncc.edu) away. Thank you, and GO NINERS! Jordan Holliday-Millard, Assistant Director for New Student & Family Services Sources: Perspective.
