3 UNC CHARLOTTE | FRESHMAN Y EAR Stake Your Claim and Get Involved What does the Organization of African Students, Campus Bible Fellowship and club paintball have in common? At UNC Charlotte, those are just a few of the more than 350 student-led organizations and clubs that fuel campus life. Although your Niner may be the new kid on the block, we highly encourage them to get involved. We guarantee your student will make friends, gain transferable skills and assimilate themselves into Niner Nation through their campus involvement. Below we’ve provided five tips on how to get involved at UNC Charlotte. FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU’RE PASSIONATE ABOUT. What really grinds your gears? If there is a topic that gets your blood boiling or a societal problem you can talk about for hours, use it to guide you as you find your niche. KEEP AN OPEN MIND. Don’t knock something until you try it. Remember, you’re not legally bound to any campus organization. It’s perfectly fine to attend general meetings until you decide whether that particular organization is for you or not. TAKE RISKS. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Coming to college is your clean slate; new campus, new people, new opportunities, new successes, new failures. This is your chance to reinvent yourself. There’s nothing wrong with caution but it would be a shame to miss out on the opportunity to let your light shine due to a little fear or reservation. USE SOCIAL MEDIA TO YOUR ADVANTAGE. Use social media to stay in the loop; it is the number-one way organizations and clubs connect with their members. The big three are Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat. For starters we recommend following: @cabunccharlotte, @uncc_sga and @unccharlotte DO YOUR RESEARCH. Orgsync is your friend. It is the gateway to all campus organizations, a description of what they do, when they meet and how to contact them. The ball really is in your court! Our student body is comprised of 30,000 unique individuals. How will your Niner stand out and leave his or her mark on the Queen City? BY DANIEL WATSON, NEW STUDENT AND FAMILY SERVICES
