WILLIAMS of Helping Hands Long before the name of Captain Joseph Barry Jones, a Purple Heart recipient, was sketched onto the Vietnam Memorial Veterans Wall at Panel 37E - Line 37 in Washington, D. C., the Lyons Lions Club made certain the first citizen of Lyons killed in Vietnam had been laid to rest with honor. In 1968, “The club set out 65 flags along the burial route” said Larry Griggers. “Even though I wasn’t there, it’s one of the reasons I’m most proud to be a part of the Lyons Lions Club.” December 17, 2016, the Lyons Lions Club celebrated 70 years of service in our community. In 2017, they joined the Lions Clubs International in celebrating 100 years dedicated to humanitarian service and community. In 106 Toombs County Magazine 1917, Melvin Jones established the Lions Club International, “In response to social problems created by World War I and rapid industrialization.” His personal code, “You can’t get very far until you start doing something for somebody else” embodies the spirit of what is now the world’s largest service organization. This year Lions International is in its Centennial Year and has more than 1.4 million members in over 200 countries around the world. The Lyons Lions Club is one of the 46,000 local clubs, and it has been a part of that service tradition for 70 years, having been founded by a prominent group of Lyons citizens on December 17, 1946.
