E. Castleberry, who we believe was either a member of the Montgomery County Lions Club, who sponsored us as a branch club, or was a state officer called in to help us get started. The club was made up of 35 business people, government workers and farmers in the community. They held their first banquet celebrating the receipt of their charter on January 26, 1947, in the New Lyons Hotel. “Regular meetings were held on the first and third Monday of each month, and dues set at one dollar per month. Jewell D. Matheson, our first President, listed his profession as a Petroleum Jobber. We believe he owned the rural gas company located between the old library and what was then the Greyhound bus station in Lyons. I remember him as the father of the identical twins Chris & Chip Matheson, Lyons High School Class of ’65, and husband of Mrs. Matheson who taught me Social Science. “Mr. J. M. Fairley transferred his membership from the Montgomery Lions Club to become the 1st Vice President of the new club at Lyons. His profession was listed as Athletic
