did. And the money was used for a new vocational wing. Steve was not only the Vocational Director, he was also the Chief GED Examiner and Adult Ed Coordinator. Classes were held at the high school. A bigger facility and more vocational classes were desperately needed. After months of work and research, Steve presented information to the State Finance Committee to prove Toombs County was the perfect place for a Vocational School. “That same night, Dwayne Hamilton, the Finance Committee Chairman, called me and said, ‘You’ve got your money.’ It was 5.4 million dollars.” The result was Southeastern Technical College. Steve’s contributions to our community are woven into the fabric of who we are in so many ways. One of those is the success of the Vidalia Onion. The only reason I’m okay with only a mention of his contribution to giving our world-famous Vidalia Onions a place in history is because, well, I’d have to write a book, and he’s already written it. It’s called The Vidalia Sweet Onion Craze. (For 20 years, Steve Built in 1993, this 3 bedroom, 2 bath home has been recently updated and offers many amenities. You also know that his mother gave him the responsibility of providing for the physical needs of his disabled brother Bob, which he did until his brother’s death. Through Steve’s mother’s compassion and his brother’s incredible ability to give value to each person he met, Steve learned to do much more than just survive. He learned to serve others by giving his all. He did that by giving himself fully to his work whether that meant serving the people of Okinawa in the same way he served a three-star General or serving our schools and the community in which he lives. Sounds simple, but you know, it’s a rare commodity these days. This story is one more reason why I believe the power to choose how we respond to our circumstances to be one of the greatest of God’s gifts to us. Perhaps, as Steve’s life so powerfully demonstrates, it is not so much our circumstances as it is our choices that create a path for our purpose and connect us to a future we might not yet be able to see.TCM owned and operated Vidalia Sweet Onion Hut with his business partner Jim Winn). After 36 years as the Vocational Director at Vidalia Comprehensive High School, Steve retired. He now offers financial counseling service free to the public at Steve Weeks Financial Service in Vidalia. He considers it as part of fulfilling the promise he made to God back in basic training. It was in his struggle to survive that Steve would learn to succeed. He’s fought for many a soldier who never received his medals or honor that was due him. He even wrote the Pentagon on behalf of a soldier who had been dishonorably discharged during the Vietnam War and was so convincing on the man’s behalf that they agreed to officially have his discharge papers changed to Honorable discharge. That just doesn’t happen. If you read Part I of Steve’s story in the last publication, you know that as a small child he followed his mother all over Savannah as she searched for special needs children who had been hidden away by their families Ryker Carter OWNER, LAND SPECIALIST Kyle Cato, OWNER, BROKER Tommie Williams LOCAL AGENT Beautiful Country Living in Toombs County!
