Head down to the birthplace of key lime pie for a little taste, and you will see what they mean ... love and limes! The weekend events include the Key Lime Cocktail Sip & Stroll, the Key Lime Pie Hop, Key Lime rum sampling, Key Lime cooking, a Key Lime pie eating’ contest and the 4th of July fireworks picnic. Tuesday, July 4 11th Annual Firecracker 5K Run Morgan Family Community Center 6207 West Price Blvd., North Port Race begins at 7:30 a.m. The course is flat, fast, and well marked with a water station along the way in the 3.1-mile stretch. Tuesday, July 4 Englewood Firecracker Festival & Block Party Dearborn Street, Englewood The Lemon Bay Sunrise Rotary Club hosts the annual Englewood Firecracker Festival and Block Party on Dearborn Street, followed by the “Light Up Lemon Bay” fireworks display. Festivities feature a musical lineup including Copperhead, Bobby C and July Love and closing the show with Echo Matrix. There will be food & beverage vendors and more than 60 craft vendors, Don’t miss the worldfamous “Chicken Sheet Bingo.” Fireworks over Lemon Bay will begin around 9 p.m. Admission is free. Tuesday, July 4 4th Fest 2017 Laishley Park, Punta Gorda Gates open from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Water-mania at Laishley Park with over a dozen water slides, live music and vendors. The live music starts at noon and the party continues until 9 p.m., when the fireworks are scheduled to go off. Admission is $3 and kids under 12 are free. Friday, July 7 through Sunday, July 9 Sarasota Lionfish Derby Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium 1600 Ken Thompson Parkway, Sarasota All are invited to participate in the 4th annual Sarasota Lionfish Derby! These events are an important way to harvest large numbers of this invasive species that has spread along the eastern Atlantic coast. Divers will harvest lionfish, provide public education and opportunities to taste the delicious lionfish for free. Registration is $120 per team.
