Richard Dascall I hope this finds everybody doing well. The weather has been hot and the crowds have been massive this summer. Memorial Day weekend we saw over 48,000 cars come onto Tybee. That translates to about 150,000 people coming here over the course of one weekend. It has certainly been a busy summer for us so far. Beach Bum came and went with no real issues and so did Memorial Day. The beach has been absolutely PACKED for the past several weeks. Over at the police department we have started our Beach Ambassador program. We utilize the Ambassadors to help educate people about our beach rules, and some of the things to do around Tybee while they’re here visiting. I want to urge everyone to please be careful in the water, especially near the jetties. Recently we had a group of people in the water near the south end jetties get caught by the tide. Two of them were pushed into the jetties and another four were carried further out. Our newest Beach Patrol officer, SPO Strickland, didn’t skip a beat when he saw this happening. He was quick to drop his gun belt and get in the water to help these people until Ocean Rescue was able to arrive on scene. Everyone was able to get out of the water safely with minor injuries, but it certainly could have been a lot worse if there hadn’t been people there to help out. I hope everyone is having a great summer and soaking up as much sun as they can. If you need anything don’t hesitate to stop one of our officers and ask.
