Horse Breeds: So Many, So Beautiful EE www.EliteEquestrian.us 59 Many of us grew up with one horse in the family. Forever, that one horse is stamped into our minds whenever we hear the word “horse.” But it’s important to remember that there are nearly 58 million horses in the world and more than three hundred breeds of horses and ponies, with their roots scattered across the globe. The beauty of this ancient animal is realized in such a vast variety of ways, from the curl of a Kathiawari’s ear to the tuft of a Fjord horse’s mane. Now, not all of them are used in equestrian sports: Some are too big, like the amazingly huge draft horses meant to hall cargo or the warhorses meant to charge into battle. Some are too small, like the adorable Shetland pony, which can serve better as a pet than a mode of transportation. Still others are bred for their beauty rather than their speed and strength alone, like the golden-coated Akhal- Teke. As equestrians, it’s important for us to have an in-depth understanding of horse breeds and why some horses are stronger, faster, or more beautiful than others. Horses bred to corral cows aren’t always the best for winning at the Kentucky Derby. Knowing the best breed for the job at hand is part of the battle! So, do you know your Morgan from your Mustang?
