Throughout the decades of recorded Jazz, there have been many masters who have made their contributions and passed away. But for Vibe Musician Terry Gibbs, he is still here and making music as if he were in his 30’s. At the ripe young age of 92, Mr. Gibbs decided to come out of “retirement” to record a session. Having a career that spanned eight decades, Terry demonstrates that age is just a number! For many years, Terry’s quartet included a woman playing the piano (and vibes), something rare in those more traditional days. Throughout his many years of performing, he also toured the U.S. and abroad with a racially mixed band, surmounting another social barrier. His energy and desire was cultivated over the years, having played in the giants of the genre, including Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie in Bebop and Benny Goodman in Swing. For his latest effort, “92 Years Young: Jammin’ at the Gibbs House”, Terry picked 15 songs out of 31 possible songs to record. As mentioned, the session took place in the home of Mr. Gibbs. A sound man came in with the equipment, and the result was very pleasing to him. Terry’s son, Drummer Gerry took the recording to New York to have it mixed and mastered. The fun begins with the standard, “Back Home in Indiana”, at a fast a steady pace: from that point on, I knew that I was in for a treat. “Yesterdays” is a mid-tempo tune that gave the quartet room to express themselves. Then the of Your Smile” followed. The beautiful “What’s New” displays the romantic side of the group. The up-tempo “Take the ‘A’ Train” shows that Terry still loves to perform this composition. Mr. Gibbs gives tribute to fellow vibraharpist, Lionel Hampton, with “Blues for Hamp”. in a sentimental mood with “I’m Getting Sentimental Over You”. “Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea” shows how tight these gentlemen are and how much fun they were having. By the way, Terry produces this recording. All in all, “92 Years Young: Jammin’ at the Gibbs House” may or may not be the last recording of the Legendary Terry Gibbs; but do yourself a favor and get this disc, and listen to it over and over as I have. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed. Terry Gibbs – Vibes John Campbell – Acoustic Piano Gerry Gibbs - Drums Mike Gurrola - Bass Terry Gibbs By: Harvest Williams 68
