NOTES UNDERLAY If you were building a house, you would start with the foundation and build from there. A successful design is created in the same manner. Underlay stitching is the foundation for a design. Underlay stitches are running stitches precisely placed underneath satin and fill stitches to prevent them from sinking into your fabric, not registering, distorting, and puckering. Using underlay will even reduce your stitch counts because you will not need as many top stitches in a design. There are very specific guidelines for using underlay.
