NOTES VARIABLE - STITCH ANGLE When digitizing a fill stitch, the angle of the pattern is the most important variable of the design. The three angles shown below are what I use the most in my designs. As I’ve said a few times in this section, fill stitches are hard to control and improper use of them can ruin a design. You will notice that there is no 90 degree angle shown here. Why wouldn’t I recommend using that angle? The reason is actually very simple. Most garments that you will stitch your designs on will be knit. The weave of a knit is at 90 degrees. When you stitch at that angle the thread will actually stitch into the weave instead of spanning it. When the threads stitch into the weave it will distort the pattern and push the design apart. Using the 45 and 135 degree angles will span the weave of almost any fabric resulting in less stitch absorption and smoother sewing. I find that these 2 different angles work with any design. You will see a few exceptions to these rules when we work through the designs. Create a reference guide with different angles and patterns like you see above so that you can refer to it when you are designing. Simply create a 2 inch square, fill them with stitches, and then add the angles or pattern names underneath. This will save you hours of time.
