FABRICS Sweater Knits Sweaters are one of the more difficult fabrics to embroider on. The weave is loose and if you try to hoop the sweater with layers of stabilizer you can damage the garment or end up with embroidery which is far too thick and stiff for the garment. When we embroider on sweaters we use freestanding embroidery designs and then stitch them onto the sweater. Leather and Suede Nothing says high fashion like real leather. We don’t embroider directly on leather. Instead we use it as an appliqué material. Always choose the thinnest leather possible for your appliqué. As noted previously, there are two types of appliqué borders; a raw edge border and the satin stitch border. Leather works better with the raw edge borders. Now, how about washing leather? Leather can get wet but the appearance will change. Remember, you will only be using small pieces of leather. The dryer is what can truly damage the leather. If you put the garment in the dryer for a few minutes and then let it air dry you will be fine. If you can’t find leather locally, do an Internet search. You will find it in a multitude of treatments and colors. Hipster Nouveau Birds and Leaves
