TIPS & TRICKS Meet your new best friend, the Cast Iron Thread Stand. This works great for any thread that is causing you trouble, but it is especially helpful for metallic and hologram thread. Metallic thread is tricky because it actually holds its coiled shape slightly as it comes off the spool which can create crimping and a lot of headaches. I always use this with metallic threads and it works perfectly. The trick is to put the stand 6-8 ft away from your machine. This essentially allows the thread to straighten itself out under its own weight, so by the time it gets to the machine, it is no longer curling up. Feed the thread up through this hook with the curved edge pointed in the direction that the line is feeding. If your spool has a base or a wide bottom, flipping it upside down can help the thread come off wider and help prevent crimping. It is also important to remember to treat your metallic and hologram threads like gold. If they are rubbing against each other when stored, this can cause more issues for the threads when you use them. Also, as you get to the end of a spool, the thread is more tightly wound and therefore holds its coiled shape. The thread stand helps with this of course, but you might also try flipping your thread upside down as noted above. Cast iron thread stands can be found at any sewing or quilting shop, or online.
