I BELIEVE THAT ANYONE WHO EMBROIDERS OR QUILTS IS AN ARTIST Fast forward a few months, I was hosting a party at my home and had few embroidered pieces hanging around the house next to my other pieces of art. I was asked about them by numerous people. “Who is that artist?” they would ask. I then explained that they were my pieces, and explained how I made them. One of the people that asked was a gallery owner in Charlotte. We discussed the pieces, and she was very impressed with the technique and fascinated by embroidery as art. She asked if I had ever shown any of the pieces in a gallery, and I said that I hadn’t. She then replied that I should and asked if I was interested in submitting pieces for consideration in upcoming shows. I went to the studio the following day and started brainstorming with the team on ideas that I have had for a while. I was very interested in seeing how we could transform fabric and thread to an entirely different level. We decided to use thread, fabric, paint, and wood to create a piece of art for submission. When I showed the piece to the gallery owner, she was so impressed that she asked if I was interested in having my own solo show. If you don’t know about fine art, this is a really big deal. The whole gallery would showcase my pieces for a month as a featured artist. Normally there would be a lot of pressure to do this, but having the show at this gallery made the pressure even more so. The gallery is called the New Gallery of Modern Art and they sell pieces from some of the most famous artists in the word, Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, and Hunt Slonem, to name a few. I would need to create about 30 pieces and would only have about 4 months to do it. Without thinking about the work involved, I immediately said yes and started planning the show.
