IF YOU CANT FIND THE RIGHT FABRIC...PAINT IT. We have written about painting fabric in previous issues of All Access. You may be asking, “Why would you take perfectly good fabric or a completed quilt and paint it?” My answer is, “Why not?” The idea started because of a sample that was essentially worn out. Our samples travel all around the country for years. They are packed up, folded, handled, and shipped hundereds of times. Eventually, they are retired. One of those samples was the Golden Tapestry Special Ediiton. Instead of throwing it away, we decided to mount it to a board and paint it! We used metallic gold spraypaint that you can purchase at any hardware store. These are the step by step photos of the painting process. This is the finished piece that shows the painted background, along with the 3D embroidery and the 3D butterfly that was mounted on top of it.
