NOTES RUNNING STITCH APPLIQUÉ Appliqué is used more extensively than any other technique at Anita Goodesign. There are two advantages to using appliqué. The first is that design production increases, and the second is that you will be able to add an element to the design that would not be achievable using traditional stitching techniques. Let’s discuss both reasons: PRODUCTION ADVANTAGES Time Saving Creating an appliqué design does not take longer to digitize, but a design that has an appliqué in it can stitch up to 75% faster. The more thread that is in a design, the longer it will take to stitch. A 5” square of thread may take 20 minutes to stitch, while a 5” square of appliqué may take only 5 minutes. If a design contains more than one appliqué, it multiplies even more. Quality Control By using appliqué you will no longer need to worry about skipped stitches, bobbin showing through, or being able to see your base fabric through your design. DESIGN ADVANTAGES Different Fabrics By using different textured fabrics you will change the way a design looks. Fabrics like suede, knit, or felt will give a design texture that thread will never accomplish. Different Looks The following pages will demonstrate a lot of creative uses of appliqué. These techniques totally change the way a design looks. Color Matching One of the toughest things to do with a large project is to keep your colors consistent. If you are creating a large quilt that combines multiple embroidered blocks with backgrounds and borders, you may find it difficult to keep colors consistent throughout the project. By using appliqué you can use the same set of fabrics in both the design and base of the quilt ensuring that every element of the project will go together.
