NOTES RUNNING STITCH APPLIQUÉ HOW IS APPLIQUÉ CREATED? - Most appliqué is created with three steps. 1. Placement Stitch - The placement stitch is a single ply running stitch that defines the area of the appliqué. If there are multiple appliqués you will have multiple placement stitches and you will be able to tell which is which. After the placement stitch is complete, you will lay your appliqué fabric over it. Always make sure the fabric overlaps the placement stitch by at least 1/2” on all sides. 2. Tacking stitch - The purpose of this stitch is to temporarily tack the appliqué fabric in place. After you lay the fabric down, the tacking stitch will secure the fabric, usually with either a 2-ply or bean stitch. Once this stitch is complete, you will need to trim your fabric. Simply use a sharp pair of scissors and remove the fabric from the outside edge of the appliqué. 3. Finishing Stitch - Once the appliqué is trimmed it can be finished in a number of ways. Some of the different ways to finish an appliqué will be shown on the following pages.
