Obviously, if it has not been noted by now, Breezy is a family business. It’s the pride and joy of my life (even if I can’t partake at the moment, but that’s a story for winter...). Families tend to treat each other differently than they might other people who aren’t family. It’s a lot easier to yell at family. God knows it’s easier to be REALLY mean to family. I used to fire my own family EVERY SINGLE NIGHT! I have said the most awful, terrible things to my own father, my life giver, and would hang up before he could respond in turn. I blame taxi dispatch, and our best drunken customers for this. Dispatch sucks. Dispatch from the driver’s seat is worse. It is the job. Driving would be easy if not for that god-forsaken ringtone. Phones have been broken. Friendships forever ruined. As much as I love my parents, I’ve wished very hateful things on both of them while dispatching. I can think back five years ago, the way the phone would ring off the hook. There was only one of us. When it’s only you, there’s no one to blame but yourself. Life could be stressful, but still, the onus was on you and you alone. I could only do what I could do. Then we added another cart, thinking it would make life easier. How foolish that was! Before then, we never yelled at anyone over the phone. Now, it’s an anomaly if we don’t. There was one evening I remember well. We had just acquired a real taxi cab, and trips downtown were all the craze. Whoever got to drive the car for the evening also got the pleasure of dispatching two golf carts on Tybee, exclusively. That means even if you were delivering a group to Bay Street downtown, you were still supposed to know where your two golf carts on Tybee were, and dispatch accordingly. Imagine being in a VERY loud bar on Congress Street, double parked and blocking traffic, looking for someone who called you to go back to Tybee, while at the same time dispatching two very slow golf carts on an island 20 miles away. It could be stressful! Anyway, this particular night I was on such a duty. I was in Ellis Square, doing angry circles and yelling at my drivers on Tybee, all the while waiting for a certain local to come walking out of the Barrel House. He was a VERY good local customer and was well worth being picked up. However, between the 30 minute wait I did and the utter incompetence of my drivers on the island, I lost my cool. After the tenth or eleventh time, I called my boy downtown, then I flipped and chucked my ever ringing phone across the car. Total rage move, but I was done. Just my luck though, despite a $100 protective case that was supposed to be immune to such things, the screen caught the lock on the passenger side door just right and utterly SHATTERED. Woe was me! There I was, downtown with no phone. No dispatch for my drivers, so now after 11 hours I’m the ahole costing them money. God, four years later I still get angry! Now we have a small fleet. I have been spoiled by only having to drive and answer my own phone. This Fourth of July I dispatched from HQ. Everything was running smoothly until after the fireworks. Surprise surprise, we had a traffic jam. Everyone was on the south end and now they wanted to go north. I explained to the callers that no one was going anywhere anytime soon. Look at the traffic. Butler was backed up past 14th St. My favorite question is, “How long is it going to last?” How in the bleep do I know! This traffic jam lasted until 1:30am. Oh here is another question that gets me a tiny bit angry, “Don’t you know the back roads, or isn’t there another way?” Yes there is another way. Walk! motherfather! Walk!
