Richard Dascall Hopefully this finds everyone enjoying their summer. I personally am exhausted and ready for a nice quiet winter. But enough of my whining. The fourth has come and gone and up next we have Labor Day, which seems to be quickly approaching. The beaches are packed and at high tide it seems like its standing room only. Over at the police department we’ve had lots of stuff going on. Captain Fobes and Captain Hayes both recently graduated from Columbus State University Command College. This is a program that takes place over several years. At the completion, graduates receive Master’s Degrees in Public Safety Administration. It’s no small task to be working full time, raising a family, then on top of that be enrolled in a graduate program. All of us at the department are very proud of both of them and what they’ve accomplished. During the Fourth of July festivities, we saw somewhere in the neighborhood of thirty arrests for what seems like everything you could imagine. The crowds were huge, and with them brought lots of traffic. We were fortunate this year though that the usual backup we see leaving the island was relatively short compared to past years. Everyone stayed busy throughout the whole day. In the midst of everything going on, we had an adult with special needs go missing on the beach for several hours. On a normal day this is a difficult situation. Add in the large crowds on the beach and the fact he had a twin brother wearing the same thing as him, and it got even more complicated. Luckily though, with a joint effort between Police, Fire, and Ocean Rescue, the man was located fifteen blocks from where he went missing. Two things I would like to remind everyone of, Soloman Ave., near the Post Theatre, is a one way street. I know it’s an easy way to get around the north end, but the people who live on that road are concerned with the traffic on it. Also, if you’re riding your bicycle, try to use 2nd Ave as opposed to Jones as much as possible. 2nd has been designated as a bike path and doesn't have the sort of traffic that Jones does. It’s much safer for both the drivers and bicyclists. Pretty soon school will be back in and things will start to slow down around here again. I hope everyone is able to enjoy the rest of their summer and always, if you need anything don’t hesitate to contact the police department.
