Southwest Florida has an abundant amount of scenic trails for bicyclists, joggers and walkers to enjoy without having to face the threat of vehicular traffic. The Legacy Trail in Sarasota County links to the Venetian Waterway Park (VWP) at the Venice Train Depot at the Venice Avenue Bridge, where trail users can continue south on VWP mainland trail to the Shamrock Park Nature Center or cross the Intercoastal Waterway to the VWP island-side trail and south to Caspersen Beach Park. It is about 15 miles from the trail’s beginning point near Sawyers Loop Road in Sarasota to either of the southern trailheads at Caspersen Beach or Shamrock Park. The Punta Gorda Harborwalk is an asphalt boardwalk on the south side of the Peace River bridge that connects Port Charlotte with Punta Gorda. The 2.4 mile bridge leads to bike trails that end at Fishermen’s Village and Punta Gorda Linear Park. The park follows the route of the Florida Southern Railroad (dating back to 1886) through a historical neighborhood. September/October 2017 GASPARILLA ISLAND 25
