Children & Families Opening of Disney musical “The Beauty and the Beast” in Opera Theater March 26, 2010 in Buenos Aires, Argentina Beauty and the Beast (La Belle et la Bête) is a classic fairy tale written by French novelist Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve and published in 1740. In this version, Beauty is the youngest, kindest and most beautiful of a widower merchant’s six children. When Beauty’s father is lost at sea during a storm, he seeks shelter in a beautiful castle. It is there that he is confronted by the Beast and negotiates the trade of Beauty in exchange for his life. While living at the castle, Beauty enjoys luxury and kindness from the Beast. In fact, he proposes marriage to her every night, but she refuses. When Beauty becomes homesick, the Beast allows her a short visit home. While at home, Beauty discovers that the Beast has becomes deathly ill from heartbreak. She returns to him, and weeping over him, tells him she loves him. And that’s when the Beast turns into a handsome prince. Many versions and adaptations of this tale have appeared over the years, including plays, ballets, musicals, films and even television shows.
