Hollywood parties, disguises and even a fake wedding ceremony ensue in this delightfully updated comic opera, first performed in Paris in 1843. Mozart. Libretto by Giovanni Battista Varesco. Directed by David Walsh. Based on a story from Homer, this opera about King Idomeneo of Crete takes place just after the Trojan War. The captured Trojan princess Ilia, who is grieving the death of her father and brother, hates Idomeneo but is in love with his son. Unfortunately, the sea god Neptune and Greek princess Elektra have their own agendas which disrupt the lovers’ plans. This opéra bouffe is based on the classic Greek legend about Orpheus who must travel to the underworld to retrieve his wife, Eurydice. A satirical retelling that includes a comparison of the households of the Emperor Napoleon III and the god Jupiter, this version will be the English adaptation originally created for the 1985 English National Opera production.
