American Artists The American Artist Series This issue continues another American Artists Series, now in its Martha H. Tisdale Georgia Artist of the Year martisdale@gmail.com 42 | Exploring Art www.tctosca.com Martha Tisdale creates art from an inherent desire to express visually that which she sees in life around her. Color, the effects of light and shadow, the tension between shapes or figure and their surroundings are expressions she wishes to record for others to share through her eyes. Her magnets are the visual aspects of everyday life, wishing to convey the beauty in ordinary things: landscapes such as gardens, ponds, vistas and figurative works. Tisdale’s media ranges from watercolor, acrylic, oil, to pastel and crayon. Each medium is chosen for its characteristics: “Thunderbird”, 10.25 x 14 inches, watercolor watercolor to express quick and fluid characteristics, acrylics for quick drying, oil for blendable color variations, and pastel or crayon for strong linear marks. Her style is not to be photo-representational, but to create a painting of recognizable subjects which give one glimpses of life where we are at the present moment. seventh year. (Last year, our sixth year, we revisited some of our favorite American Artists from the previous five years.) Each year, we search for art all over the United States, looking for that special, unique “something” that only talented, dedicated and inspired artists can provide. As always, our goal is to bring our readers artists who excel in their work and art that we believe our readers will truly appreciate. We look for art that is visually beautiful, emotionally or spiritually provocative and/or intellectually challenging. Because we always have the reader in mind we also consider the accessibility of the artists and the art. Therefore, we also look for art that we believe the viewer will want to hang in their home or their place of business, art that can be seen on a website and artists that can be reached. I have learned, after doing this for four years now, that we are a country filled with talented artists and remarkable art. Each artist has their own story and while their artistic ability is impressive, they are not simply defined by their art. I encourage you to visit their websites, enjoy their art and read their bios and statements. Some of them have stories as fascinating as their art. And by all means, treat yourself to a great piece of art! Gail M. Weber
