Families That Play Together About Theatre NATHANIEL AND CATHLEEN FULLER For two veteran professional actors who’ve been married to each other for nearly 35 years, it should be strange that Nathaniel and Cathleen Fuller have only played a married couple on the stage twice. That doesn’t mean they haven’t been in several other productions together; in fact, they recently completed a successful run in Park Square Theatre’s Amy’s View. Nathaniel, a Duluth native, trained for theater (directing) at the University of Southern California and Cathleen stayed close to her suburban Chicago roots at Elmhurst College, but the Twin Cities theater scene attracted them here. They met, prophetically, in bed, doing a diet pop commercial in 1976; it wasn’t until 1983 that the stars aligned for them, though. Asked what the biggest challenge has been for them as two thespians, the immediate and unanimous answer was, “Money.” This is not unusual for actors anywhere, but they’ve made it 6 | About Theatre www.tctosca.com work. Nathaniel (who may hold the record for “consecutive seasons performing at the Guthrie”) and Cathleen (who specializes in one-woman shows, portraying newspaper advicecolumnist Ann Landers, e.g.) both have done their share of commercials and voice-overs. Does anyone remember seeing them in ads for Target, Dayton’s, or Miracle Ear over the years? Certainly, commercials are not what draws them or keeps them acting. Every actor has a favorite role. For Nathaniel, it’s King Lear; he recently starred in that play at the Guthrie. Cathleen is fervent with excitement, remembering the role of the ghost of accused spy Ethel Rosenberg in Angels in America at Pillsbury House in Minneapolis in 1995. With such diverse roles, flexibility, and support for each other personally and professionally, the Fullers admit, “We’ve been blessed–and we’ve been lucky!” Theatre WHEN I NOD MY HEAD YOU HIT IT WITH THE HAMMER | Sept. 15–23, 2017 Forever Theatre, Southern Theater (1420 Washington Ave. S, Minneapolis, MN) Created by Jon Ferguson, Sara Richardson, Lauren Anderson, John Cooper & Allison Witham.
