Scuba diving, as any sport, has some risk and you must understand this before you become a diver. Most dives are very easy. However, on every dive there is always a chance that you will need to exert yourself greatly. At times, diving can be very strenuous. This is particularly true if you dive in cold water, dive in strong currents, or make beach entries through surf (figure 1-8). As in any activity, the ultimate risk in diving is of being injured or killed. Serious injuries and deaths caused by diving are extremely rare though, and most divers never suffer any type of mishap. However, you need to recognize that risk exists. As a diver, you must be willing to accept this risk and take responsibility for your own actions. You will be asked to sign an Express Assumption of Risk Associated with Diving and Related Activities which explains the risks of diving. Also, this textbook clearly explains each type of risk associated with diving. In addition, your instructor will explain the risks in diving in general and any risks that are unique to your local dive sites. If you are a minor, your parents will also have to understand the risks you face in diving. They will be asked to sign your waiver and medical history form. Introduction 7 FIGURE 1-8. SOMETIMES CONDITIONS ARE SO BAD THAT IT IS ADVISABLE NOT TO DIVE.
