GLOSSARY 221 T Test Date: A date stamped on a scuba cylinder indicating the date of the last hydrostatic test. The rmocline: The dividing line between water of different temperatures. Tid e: The change in water level of the ocean caused by the gravitational attraction between the Earth, Moon, and Sun. Tid al Current: A water flow that accompanies changes in the tide, usually a result of water flowing into or away from an area such as an inlet or bay. Tim ing Device: A device used to record the length of a dive. For example, a watch or bottom timer. Tot al Nitrogen Time: The sum of Residual Nitrogen Time and Actual Dive Time following a repetitive dive. Tra il Line: A floating rope used while boat diving. It is extended from the stern of the boat with an attached float to aid divers returning to the boat. Tra nsitory Current: A current that lasts only for a short time and, unlike a tidal current, does not occur with any predictability. V Val salva Maneuver: The term popularly used to describe the attempted exhalation against a closed nose and mouth to open the Eustachian tubes and equalizes the ears. Ver tigo: A loss of the sense of balance. Severe dizziness. Vis ual Inspection: A periodic inspection of a scuba cylinder that checks for corrosion and to ensure the integrity of the cylinder. It is also known as a Visual Cylinder Inspection (VCI) or Visual Inspection Program (VIP). W Wet suit: A diving suit that allows a small amount of water to enter the covered area. This water is trapped inside the suit and warmed by the body, thus providing a certain amount of protection from the cold, in addition to the insulation afforded by the suit itself. GLOSSARY
