Chapter 2- Diving Equipment Diving Equipment 45 • A goodie bag to hold game, specimens, artifacts, trash, and other treasures. • An underwater light, which is necessary for night diving, but is also good to have during the day to bring out colors and to peer into holes and crevices. • A marker buoy to mark the location of a dropped item or a specific area. • A Surface Marker Buoy (figure 2-48), sometimes called a ‘safety sausage’ is a device that can be used on the surface to make it easier for you to be seen by boat traffic or other divers. Your instructor will teach you how to use this important accessory. • A spare parts kit that includes the items that can save a dive. The items can include a mask strap, a snorkel keeper, a fin strap, assorted O-rings, and a regulator mouthpiece with attachment strip. • A checklist is a great way to remember all of the gear you need for diving as well as personal items. See Appendix C for samples of checklists. Verify What You Have Learned Review the following questions about accessory equipment: 26. Remember that all this equipment helps you adapt to the underwater environment and function there as comfortably and safely as possible. As you begin your diving experience, most gear can be rented from your local dive facility. As you dive more, you will want to begin purchasing your own gear. The more you work with your gear, the easier it becomes to use. Once the gear is easy to use, you will be able to devote more of your attention to your surroundings and activities. FIGURE 2-48.
